Lost Creek Cemetery is the peaceful burial grounds of some the early pioneers to this spot of East Tennessee. Here rests patriots of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and several from the American Civil War. Hundreds of burial sites are marked with field stones surrounded by acres of periwinkle, a ground cover common to early cemetery's for its effectiveness in keeping down the growth of saplings, briar, and honeysuckle. The earliest burial with an etched headstone is of Henry Rice who died in 1818. Time has erased all signs of a hewed log house of worship that stood within the grounds from 1818 until 1835. The old roadbed divides the cemetery before ending in the Clinch River with as many burials to the east as to the west. The upper western edges have small individual and separate family plots yet the headstones show a family mix. The main family groups are Bridges, Hill, Longmire, Rice, Sharp, Snodderly and others. There are no doubt former slaves and Native Americans also rest within these grounds surrounded by mature oaks, black gum, and maple trees. A large rounded stack of stones projects above the ground cover sitting alone in the southwest corner with no outward indication of who rests within. The TVA File Index of Cemetery Surveys conducted in 1934 has 84 burials with names and dates listed for marked headstones. There are hundreds of graves marked with field stones only and are unknown. This is an original burial site and was not relocated as a part of the Norris Dam grave relocation project. The roads are unimproved wilderness roads and four-wheel drive is a must!
