Dry Pond Cemetery is in Stoughton at the corner of Bay Road and Plain Street; it is one where many Sharon residents are buried. As you may know, the yellow line in the middle of Bay Road is the boundary line between Stoughton and Sharon! The earliest marked gravestone is that of Zachariah Lyon 1749 but Dwight MacKerron, president of Stoughton Historical Society said "it is likely that there were earlier burials!" The cemetery was named for the pond across Bay Road, now in Sharon, which in the past often dried up in the summertime. Among the Sharon residents buried here are Drakes, Waters, Gilberts, Fields. Many of you may remember Edna Field, known as "the egg lady!" She was a member of the Drake family. Myron Gilbert whose head stone is the round ball was a grandson of Deborah Sampson. Erastus Smith was born, lived his whole life, and died within a few yards of this cemetery. Before his death he had been co-owner of the Smith, Clapp and Gay Popcorn Company.
