He was promoted II CPL on 15 August 1861 but was reduced to the ranks 'Possibly at his own request' in February 1863. William was wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville on 2 May 1863 and later died of his wounds He is buried near his parents and his brother Benjamin who had died in 1862 as A. member of the Richmond Local Defense Troops Their graves were marked in January 2019 through the efforts of the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery
