OBITUARY
MR. THOMAS JOHN (JACK) MACARTNEY.
Mr. "Jack" Macartney, of "Augherville," Coreen, who died in the Corowa Hospital on Thursday morning last, April 29, 1948, was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Macartney, one of the pioneer families In the Corowa district. He came with his parents to Coreen as a school boy in the 90's of last century. The late Mr. Jack Macartney, who was 55 years of age, was born at Lake Rowan, in Victoria. He was a popular resident of the Coreen district for many years, and took an active part in public affairs, and sporting matters generally. He was regarded as being an excellent neighbour as well as a friend of everyone. He did a great deal to foster all kinds of sport in the district, and was president of the Wheatgrowers' Union (Coreen branch) from its inception. The late Mr. Macartney married Miss Flo. Hooper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hooper, of Daysdale, and there was a family of seven sons and two daughters by this union, for whom very wide sympathy is expressed in their sad bereavement. They are Arthur, who was a driver in the Second Transport Division in the late war; Roy, Norman, Gordon, George, William and Neville; Joan and Fay. Besides his wife and family, deceased is also survived by his brother William, of Walbundrie, and his two sisters, Alice (Mrs. F. Cooper, Corowa) and Daisy (Mrs. A. Scrivener, Daysdale). Brothers and sisters who predeceased him were: Tom, Chris, George, Ernest, Fred and Mabel (Mrs. McCannon, Swan Hill). His sister, Cissie (Mrs. J. Quirk, Coreen) predeceased him recently. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church, after a short service by the Rev. N. G. Anderson, who also read the burial service at the graveside. The funeral was Iargely attended, being a very fine tribute to the fine character of thier departed district resident and friend. The remark was heard at the graveside that "his whole life was a splendid tribute to his mother's memory." Messrs. Squires and Sons had charge of the funeral arrangements.
