This tablet is erected to the Memory of Sophia Louisa Gomm, Daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Gomm and Mary Alleynne Gomm (Formerly Maynard)
Lieutenant Colonel Gomm was killed when serving under Sir Charles Grey, July the 2nd, 1794, at the storming of Point a Petre in the Island of Guadoloupe. His commander gave sincere and undoubted proofs of regret at his fall, He previously had been actively employed during the whole of the American War, and had gained the approbation of all those under whom he served. She whose loss is here commemorated died December the 10th, 1817, at the age of 29 years. she had endeared herself to her relations and friends by an early piety, an active charity and all the milder virtues of her sex, But to none could her marits be so well known as to her affectionate Aunt, who considered her as her support, her comfort, and the adviser of her old age, and whose grief at her early removal must be as lasting as breath and recollection remain.
