Mary was born in Melbourne, a daughter of Sir Francis Murphy (1809–1891) & a granddaughter of Francis Down Murphy, head of the Cork Convict Transport Department. She married William Godfrey Neill (1846-1900) in 1872.
William was born in Belfast and was Consul in Otago for the United States of America and the Hawaiian Islands. He died in an accident at Tuapeka
