Martha Was the wife of William C. Smith (who is buried in an unmarked grave three spaces over)
William, the son of John W. and Elizabeth Smith, was born in Princess Ann County, before it was subsumed by the city of Virginia Beach. He was a mechanic and cabinetmaker by trade.
He first married Martha Ann Cocke in Henrico County on 23 January 1839. They had at least four children: John Wesley, James Henry, Sarah Elizabeth, and William Edward. After her death, William married Mary Elizabeth "Bettie" Cocke in Richmond on 30 December 1850. They had at least one child, Martha Ann. Last, he married Georgiana Patterson in November 1874. They had at least one child, Percy M.
His grave in the plot he owned, near his first two wives, is unmarked.
Mary Elizabeth- Mary was the daughter of James R. Cocke and Elizabeth Fox. She married William in Richmond on 30 December 1850, and they had at least one child, Martha Ann.
She died age 44, per Cemetery records, but other sources give her birth year as 1828. Her grave in her husband's plot, near him and their daughter, is unmarked.
