Governor Joe
governor of the great & little Osages, "Governor Joe" negotiated with the Cherokees & the US Government for the purchase of what is now Osage Reservation. After a treaty of July 19, 1866 between the Cherokees & the government, the Osages moved to their new home. This land was paid for with funds from sale of land held by the Osages in Kansas. Final deed was given by the Cherokee Nation June 14, 1883.
