Hamilton enlisted with his brother Charles as A. PVT in PVT Botts'Company (Later Company "A") 5th Texas Infantry on 19 July 1861. Company A. was raised in Harris County. Texas (Though apparently Hamilton'S family home at the time was in nearby Galveston) and the regiment as A. whole was assembled in Richmond. Virginia as the various companies of men arrived there Hamilton was promoted through the non-commissioned ranks to II SGT of the Company He received A. bullet wound in the neck on 13 July 1864 near Petersburg He was taken to the Richmond home of George W. Smith. located on 4th Street between Leigh and Clay streets. where he died His marker. in the George W. Smith plot was placed in April 2017 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery".
