Dr Firth (Hal) Ward was the popular local Balgowlah, Sydney, veterinarian.
The headstone, together with the inscription, was erected by his only son, award-winning journalist Jens Ward, some 40 years after his death. Sadly, Dr Ward took his own life at Glenorie, NSW, circa 1963. His skeletal remains were found by surveyors working in dense bushland several years after his death. His son, together with Robbie Stoddart who was a surveyor schoolmate of his, retraced his father's last footsteps after getting the co-ordinates of where the remains were found from the coroner's report.
