EDWARD CHANDLER, SENR.
After an illness of about two months'
duration, Mr. Edward Chandler, of "Rocky
Falls Orchard," Euroa, passed peacefully
away on Wednesday evening, the cause of
death being paralysis. The late Mr.
Chandler was a native of Sussex, England, and arrived at Adelaide 34 years ago. Prior to coming to the colonies, he spent about three years on the flagship of the Duke of Edinburgh, touring the West Indies, being one of the ship's handsmen. In the sixties
deceased was a leading figure in metropolitan musical circles, being for many years master of the East Melbourne Artillery Band, also of the Southern District Band (South Yarra),
and other musical organisations. He was
also for some years trumpet-major in the
Bengal Light Cavalry. Deciding to try
his fortune up country, deceased settled at Wagga, New South Wales, and afterwards at Chiltern, whence he removed, some ten or twelve years ago,to Euroa. Here he and his sons wrought diligently, and soon con-
verted what was then waste heavily-
timbered land on the Seven Creeks into a magnificent orchard. His exhibits of dried and other fruits at the earlier horticultural shows gave a great impetus to the fruit growing industry in this district, and the adjoining land to the orchard was soon taken up and planted by other growers, the result being that these properties, once neglected, are among the most valuable district holdings. Deceased was always anxious to create a musical standard for the town, and several bands and orchestras
under his tuition made splendid progress.
Latterly his attention had been almost solely concentrated on his orchard, his only public appearance being when returned soldiers came home, when nothing would stop him being present with his band and taking part in the "welcome" proceedings. He leaves
a wife and large family of sons and daughters to mourn his loss. The funeral will leave his late residence at 2-30 o'clock this day.
