CHARLES...NOTE: A photo of Charles can be found on Find a grave website. Charles Henry Voges was born in Brunswick, Germany, Dec 31, 1841. When he was 12 he came to the US with his parents, settling at Madison, Wis. The voyage across the ocean brought misfortune to the family, with the passing of the mother while they were still in mid-ocean. Mr Voges grew to manhood at Madison and there learned the trade of wagon/carriage-making. In the closing year of the war he enlisted as a mechanic and spent the last six months of the war in government employ. He married Miss Susan Byers, also of Madison, April 8, 1865. Mrs Voges was born in Germany, Aug 18, 1842. When she was 7 her parents came to America, locating at Milwaukee, Wis., losing her mother and two sisters in an epidemic less than three weeks after landing. Five children were born to the Voges, namely: Charles Wm, George Herman, Frank Henry, Mrs Carrie Alice Gerber and Mrs Anna May Okken. Frank died March 1937. In 1870 the Voges immigrated to Dakota territory. In 1878 they homesteaded near the present Lennox townsite, and in 1909 they retired from active duties and moved to Worthing. The pioneer couple spent their declining years in Worthing. Their trip to Dakota Territory from Madison, Wis., was completed in a covered wagon, and for several years they resided in a sod house, enduring the hardships of early settlers. Mr Voges preceded his wife in death, passing away Feb 27, 1915. Mrs Voges succumbed Nov 4, 1930—at the age of 88. Both were buried in Lennox. NOTE ALSO: This is Charles' footstone, not his headstone, which is large and has the name Voges across it. CLIFFORD...Charles' grandson, son of JJ & AM Okken.
