Description
Son of Joseph and Charlotte Stevens. Josephs parents, William and Ann nee Newberry arrived on the Constance in 1850. The family lived in the Peachey Belt area (section 4112, 4257). Donald Norman owned the Smithfield Chaff Mill located near the Smithfield railway station. A three storey galvanised building and functioned for about 20 years between 1918 and early 1940’s. Now demolished.
Donald Norman Buckby, a middle aged man, committed suicide at Smithfield by hanging himself from a beam in the stable. Deceased, who was a former resident of near Smithfield, but who had disposed of his property and was living with relatives at Wasleys, was suffering from nervous breakdown, and about a week ago was brought into Dr. Dawes' private hospital for treatment. , William born 1817 Northampton. He married Ann Nubberry and with his family arrived in South Australia in 1850 on the ship, Constance. William settled at Findon before leaving for the gold diggings. He settled in Peachey Belt where he and his family farmed 81 acres subdivided into 6 paddocks with a four roomed house, section 4268, suited to dairy farming. The property was situated on Heaslip Road, railway line running through the property.
