James was born on the 8th February 1895 at Ballydaheen County Cork, his parents James Cronin and Hannah Sheehan were married eleven years earlier on the 22nd April 1884 at Mallow County Cork.
James joined the South Irish Horse in October 1916 and like so many recruits before him at this time, was transferred to the infantry, joining the Leinster Regiment as Private 5941 though in Soldiers Died he is shown as 5041, a typo.
