A FATALITY.

YOUNG LAD DROWNED

A CORONER'S WARNING,

TRAGEDY AT KAPONGA

[The danger which cortfronts inexperienced swimmers and the necessity for instruction, in swimming being given to juveniles were emphasized at a coronial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death, of a boy who was drowned while bathing at Kaponga on Monday.]

At Kaponga to-day Mr J. E. Anderson, J.P., conducted a coronial inquiry into a drowning fatality at Kaponga on Monday, which resulted in the death or Edmund John Albon, who, as stated in yesterday's Hawera Star, was drowned in the Kaupokonui river on Monday evening. The coroner tor the district, Mr A. M. Mowiem, S.M., in his instructions with reference to the inquiry, expressed the opinion that attention should be called to the dangers confronting inexperienced swimmers.

The jury comprised Messrs .W. G Cran (Foreman), J. Davidson, J. Hey, and H. H. Henderson.

Constable J. O'Dohoghue conducted proceedings on behalf of the police. Frank Albon, father oi! the deceased, gave evidence of identification, and said that the boy was 14 years of age on July. 19, 1924. The boy had been attending the State School, and after school hours had been employed at Messrs J. and A. Guy's motor garage, Kaponga. On arriving home from work about 5.30 p.m. on Monday, 24th, the boy had asked for permission to go for a swim. He had told the boy that the water was rather cold, but that it should be quite all right if-Mr Hingston, employed at the garage, went also., The boy then left on.his bicycle. The boy was not a good swimmer, being only a beginner- if witness had known that Mr Hingston would not be with the boy permission to go for the swim would not have been granted the latter. Witness did not know whether Hingston was a good swimmer, but naturally presumed the boy would be safer if with him. The. boy had always enjoyed good health, and had never suffered from sickness.
