Land for the cemetery was purchased in 1869. There are a number of gravestones with death dates from 1805 to 1868 which predate the cemetery founding and the sale of cemetery lots. Some families erected monuments such as pictured above memorializing burials elsewhere or had the remains moved to Mount Pleasant. The money to construct a Receiving Vault or "mortuary" building, completed in 1878, was donated by T. N. Jarvis, Esq., president of the cemetery association. The cost of the building was $600. This building is still used today. In 2010 a census was compiled of the cemetery by Sandra B. Wilsey and Anita M. Ingalls, resulting in 4,200 names recorded from gravestones and the 1996 compilation by Brandon J. Fraley with another 1,200 names of previously unrecorded or unmarked burials taken from the Town of Lenox record of burial permits, obituaries and town burials of the indigent or transient.
