Dedicated to Saint Michael and All Angels, this ancient parish church is a popular destination for visitors, situated as it is amid the beauty of the Peak District's Hope Valley. Its early history is shrouded in obscurity, and the current building, based around its decorated Gothic Nave dating from 1381, has been enlarged and modified over the years, including a major work of restoration by Butterfield in 1851. Look for the 'Eyre Brasses,' relating to several generations of a family connected to Hathersage since the 15th century and who inspired Charlotte Bronte to name her heroine 'Jane Eyre.' The east window is by the eminent stained-glass designer Charles Kempe, and in the churchyard lies the reputed grave of Little John.
