Fortingall is a highland Perthshire village some seven miles west of Aberfeldy. It stands a little to the north of the River Lyon not far from where it gushes out of the steep sided rocky jaws of Glen Lyon. Its Gaelic name is Fartairchill, which may be translated as something like: "Escarpment Church", i.e. "church at the foot of an escarpment or steep slope".The name is also believed to be derived from the Gaelic word 'fortair' (a stronghold) and 'cill' (a cell or church). The parish church [rebuilt between 1900 and 1902]is on an early Christian site, dedicated to Coeddi, bishop of Iona (died 712), probably founded about 700 AD from Iona itself as a daughter monastery. The site site had been used for Christian worship since the end of the 600's. According to legend Fortingall was the birthplace of Pontius Pilate who was born well before the Roman conquest. A number of other locations, including villages in Spain and Germany, make similar claims. It is also famous for its churchyard yew tree that is said to be the oldest living thing in Europe, over 5000 years old, possibly as old as 9,000 years.
